Surgery of
the Abdomen
(Abdominoplasty
or "Tummy Tuck")
Generally referred to as a
"tummy
tuck", abdominoplasty
removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen. The procedure also
helps to flatten the abdomen by tightening the surrounding
muscles. Women with stretched abdominal areas due to previous
pregnancies can benefit considerably from abdominoplasty,
although they should have completed their childbearing. Older
individuals whose skin has lost some of its elasticity and are slightly
obese can experience an improvement in their abdominal area.
If you are in generally good physical shape but are concerned about
abdominal fat deposits or loose skin that does not respond to diet and
exercise, the procedure can often reduce the appearance of a
protruding abdomen. Abdominoplasty produces a permanent scar which can extend to both sides of
your hips, although the scar will be located near or below the bikini
line and will fade over time.

Liposuction
(Lipoplasy /
Suction Lipectomy)
Now among the most popular
cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction (also known as "lipoplasty"
or "suction lipectomy") sculpts the body by removing undesirable
fat from areas around the thighs, knees, buttocks, waist, hips, abdomen,
chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms. Dr. Carter uses tumescent and
external ultrasound-assisted liposuction (XUAL) techniques to provide precise results.
Liposuction is
not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, but the procedure can eliminate
areas of fat that are unresponsive to typical weight-loss methods.

Body
Lifts
Some patients are plagued with loose skin
that cannot be corrected with liposuction. Aging, weight loss, and
heredity patterns can all lead to this undesirable sagging of the skin
that is best addressed by skin removal. Skin lifts require longer scars
to reshape an area while trimming off the excess tissue. Scars are
hidden within the body's natural contours but none-the-less can be
visible. With time and special care after surgery, the scars will often
fade nicely.
- Arm
Lift (brachioplasty) -
An arm lift tightens and recontours the loose skin of the upper
arms. The area may be addressed with liposuction initially and then
the excess skin is removed. For most patients, the incision extends
from the underarm down to the inner elbow. A modified arm lift, with
a shorter incision, may be an option if the sagging skin is located
higher up the arm. This modified procedure is more popular, but may
not meet the needs of some patients.
- Medial
Thigh Lift - Liposuction
of the inner thighs is often requested, but is not always the best
choice. This area tends to become more lax as we age or lose weight
leading to loose, saggy skin. To tighten and recontour the area a
medial thigh lift may be recommended. The incisions are placed in
the creases of the groin area. To promote the best healing of the
incisions, it may be recommended that you take 2-4 weeks off work.
- Buttock
/Thigh Lift - This
lift tightens loose, saggy skin of the outer thighs and buttocks.
The incision for this lift is near the crease of the buttocks and
requires a 24 hour stay in the hospital to ensure the incisions are
not disturbed in the initial stages of healing. You will be laying
flat on you stomach during your hospital stay and for a time during
your home recovery.
